On Tuesday 27 January 2026, our school community joins people across the UK and around the world in marking Holocaust Memorial Day. This important day remembers the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of others killed through Nazi persecution and in more recent genocides.

Holocaust Memorial Day falls on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 and invites us all to pause, reflect, and learn from the past — while considering our responsibility in the present.

At 8pm on 27 January, people are invited to take part in Light the Darkness, a national moment of remembrance.

Our act is simple but powerful as we light up Kingsmeadow Community School in purple.

This shared moment will allow us to symbolise remembrance, hope, and unity, and show our commitment to stand against hatred, antisemitism, racism and all forms of prejudice, while upholding dignity and human rights for all.

Mr Barrett, Headteacher said: “Across the country, homes, community spaces and well-known landmarks will also be lit in purple, and I am proud to have Kingsmeadow Community School representing the local community for Holocaust Memorial Day. We are lighting up the school in remembrance of those who were murdered during the holocaust, but also to stand in solidarity with all members of our community against prejudice and hatred in all its forms.”

Our Light the Darkness event
