We value reading as an important life skill and a vital element of the secondary curriculum, and we encourage students to develop a love of reading through varied literary experiences which allow them to explore a range of perspectives, ideas and cultures in fiction and non-fiction.

Our Tutor Read Aloud Programme enables every tutor group to read together for at least 30 minutes each week, investing themselves in a shared narrative. Each tutor group is allocated a set text and tutors read this text aloud while students follow in their own copies.

Tutor groups in Years 7 and 8 are reading texts nominated by the Literacy Trust including ‘A Darkness of Dragons’, ‘Some Places More than Others’, ‘The Haven’, ‘Crater Lake’ and ‘Little Bird Flies’.

In Year 9, texts include ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Noughts and Crosses’.

In Year 10, our students are reading ‘Divergent’, ‘1984’ and ‘The Penguin Lessons’, and in Year 11, they have been introduced to ‘Gone’, ‘Insurgent’ and ‘The Fault in our Stars’.
