Minute by minute commentary from Executive Sports Reporter Ryan H (Year 10)
The annual Teachers vs Year 11 football match returned for another memorable chapter, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Packed with drama, crunching tackles, spectacular saves, controversial moments and plenty of laughs, the teachers eventually ran out deserved 5-3 winners in a thrilling end-of-year fixture.
But the match got off to the worst possible start for the teachers, with the Year 11 side needing just five seconds to break the deadlock and take a shock 1-0 lead. The students were buzzing, but the experienced teachers refused to panic.
An excellent challenge from Mr Dalgado helped settle the teachers before neat passing between Mr D. Milton and Mr Spooner created the first attacking opportunities. Otto and Logan also impressed for Year 11 with several interceptions, even sending Mr Wilson “to the shops” with some clever skill, although they couldn’t extend their lead.
After six minutes, former teacher Mr Atchison stepped in as the referee following a late change, bringing some much-needed control to an increasingly physical contest.
Both teams exchanged chances throughout the first half. Mr Wilson produced several fine saves, while Mr Brownlee’s impressive footwork left several Year 11 players stumbling over one another.
The equaliser finally arrived when Mr Brand’s effort was saved by Jayden, only for Mr Ledger to react quickest and fire home the rebound, sending the crowd into celebration as the score became 1-1.
As the game became increasingly physical, Mr Dalgado produced a thunderous challenge on an ex-student without receiving a booking.
The teachers then took complete control. Following an excellent save from Mr Wilson after a Year 11 free-kick, the teachers launched a devastating counter-attack. Mr D. Milton turned brilliantly before finding Mr Ferguson, who calmly finished to make it 2-1.
Moments later, immediately after the restart, Mr Ferguson struck again with another composed finish to extend the advantage to 3-1, leaving the Year 11 side stunned heading into half-time.
The interval brought even more entertainment as Mr Brand finally accepted his substitution after initially refusing to leave the field. He then won the traditional half-time dash against a group of students, much to the delight of spectators.
Second half
The second half initially struggled to reach the excitement of the first, with fans describing it as somewhat “lacklustre.” The main talking point during the opening stages came when Mr Brownlee flattened a Year 11 player without receiving a yellow card.
The teachers eventually found another gear. A superb passing move involving Mr Morgan and Mr D. Milton ended with Mr Ferguson completing his hat-trick to make it 4-1, all but securing victory.
Discipline briefly became an issue as Mr Hardman entered the action and found himself booked almost immediately after giving away a penalty. However, Mr Wilson produced one of the moments of the match by diving brilliantly to save the spot kick.
Mr Wilson continued to shine in goal, later producing an incredible triple save after Mr A. Milton defended heroically, earning comparisons to Gandalf with cries of, “You shall not pass!”
The teachers soon punished the missed penalty. Mr Brand finally found the scoresheet with perhaps the slowest finish ever witnessed on a football pitch, somehow rolling the ball into the net to make it 5-1. Another teachers’ goal followed shortly afterwards but was ruled out for offside.
As the match entered its closing stages, the teachers confidently passed the ball around with some impressive tiki-taka football. Mr Ford produced several excellent moments, including somehow leapfrogging over a Year 11 player, while Mr Spooner delighted the crowd with an elegant spin past his opponent.
There were still moments of drama. Mr Ferguson was shown a yellow card for diving, prompting Mr Barrett to joke that “Ferguson dived better than Tom Daley.”
The students never gave up. A chipped finish over Mr Wilson reduced the deficit before a late third goal gave Year 11 hope of an unlikely comeback, but time eventually ran out as the teachers secured an entertaining 5-3 victory.
Following the final whistle, attention turned to the Player of the Match awards. Mr Barrett selected Mr A. Milton, praising him “for actually playing proper football in slow motion.”
Mrs Lowery chose Miss Kennedy for her impressive contribution. However, the overall fan-voted MVP went to hat-trick hero Mr Ferguson, whose clinical finishing proved decisive in another memorable Teachers vs Year 11 encounter.
As the final whistle marked the end of the 2025-2026 academic year for Year 11, both players and supporters celebrated another fantastic tradition. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work throughout the year, and thank you to the teachers and staff whose support helped make another unforgettable occasion possible.
