NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering (Years 10 and 11)
The NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering introduces students to the exciting world of engineering, where creativity, problem-solving and technical knowledge are used to design and manufacture solutions to real-world challenges. The course combines practical workshop experience with classroom-based learning, helping students develop the skills and understanding needed for further study and careers in engineering, manufacturing and related industries.
Throughout the course, students explore engineering principles, materials, manufacturing processes and the importance of health and safety in engineering environments. They develop practical workshop skills, learn to use engineering tools and equipment safely, and gain experience of planning, producing and evaluating engineering products.
Students also build valuable transferable skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, mathematical application and project management, all of which are highly valued by employers and further education providers.
Course Units
Engineering Processes and Principles (External Assessment)
Students develop an understanding of the core principles of engineering, including materials, components, manufacturing methods, quality control, sustainability and health and safety. They also explore how engineering organisations work and the role engineering plays in everyday life. This unit is assessed through an external examination.
Engineering Design and Manufacture (Internal Assessment)
Students apply their knowledge by completing a practical engineering project. They interpret a design brief, plan their work, select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods, produce an engineered product, and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their final outcome.
The qualification is assessed through one externally assessed examination and one internally assessed practical project, providing students with a balance of theoretical understanding and hands-on engineering experience.
