ICT Policy
General
- As far as possible Internet sessions will always be supervised by a teacher.
- Filtering systems are used by our ISP, (Internet Service Provider Derwentside/DurhamNet), in order to lessen the risk of exposure to inappropriate material.
- The school will regularly monitor students’ Internet usage.
- Students and teachers will be provided with training in the area of Internet safety.
- Uploading and downloading of non-approved software will not be allowed.
- Virus protection software is present on all machines and is updated and checked automatically on a daily basis.
- Using personal memory sticks, CD-ROMs, or other digital storage media in school needs the permission of a teacher.
- Students will treat others with respect at all times and will not do anything that may damage the good name of the school or individuals (staff or students).
Conditions of Use
World Wide Web (Internet)
- I will not intentionally visit Internet sites that contain obscene, illegal, hateful or otherwise objectionable materials.
- I will report accidental accessing of inappropriate materials to my teacher.
- I will use the Internet for educational purposes only.
- I will tell my teacher straight away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable or upset.
- I will not copy information into my work without acknowledging the source (plagiarism and copyright infringement).
- I will not give out any personal details, such as another student’s address, telephone number, picture, school telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my teacher’s permission.
- I will not download materials or images which have nothing to do with my class work and homework.
- I understand that my use of the Internet (including distributing or receiving information, school-related or personal) may be monitored for unusual activity, security and/or network management reasons.
- I will only use search engines or sites that have been selected by a teacher.
Emails
- I will use approved email accounts.
- I will only send emails to people my teacher has approved.
- I will not send or receive anything that is illegal, obscene, hurt someone’s good name or that is intended to annoy or intimidate another person.
- I will not give out any personal details, such as another student’s address, telephone number, picture, school telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my teacher’s permission.
- I agree never to meet someone I communicate with through email.
- I will only send and receive email attachments if I have been given permission from my teacher.
Internet chat
- I will only access chat rooms, discussion forums, messaging etc. that have been approved by the school, e.g. within the Learning Platform.
- I will only use chat rooms for educational purposes and will as far as possible be supervised
- I will only use my usernames so that I can not be identified.
- I agree to never meet someone I have met in a chat room.
School Website
- Students will be given the opportunity to publish projects, artwork or school work into the Learning Platform with permission from school staff.
- The platform will be regularly checked to ensure that there is nothing which could harm or endanger students or staff.
- Guest books, noticeboards, weblogs and websites etc. will be checked regularly to make sure that they do not contain personal details.
- The publication of students’ work will be co-ordinated by school staff.
- Students’ work may appear for educational purposes on our school website pages with a copyright notice prohibiting the copying of such work without express written permission.
- The school will try to use digital photographs, audio or video clips which focus on group activities. (If you do not want your child to be included in pictures or video clips on the school website you will need to let us know in writing. Video clips may be password protected).
- Personal information including home address and contact details will never be put on school web pages.
- The school website will avoid publishing the first name and last name of students in a photograph.
- The school will make sure that the image files are appropriately named – will not use students’ names in image files if published on the web.
- Students will continue to own the copyright on any work published.
Personal Devices
Students using their own technology in school, such as leaving a mobile phone turned on to send nuisance text messages, or the unauthorised taking of images with a mobile phone camera, still or moving, is against the school’s acceptable use policy.
Support Structures
The school will inform students and parents of organisations that deal with illegal material or harmful use of the Internet.
Sanctions
Misuse of the Internet may result in disciplinary action:
- A temporary or permanent ban on Internet use.
- Additional disciplinary action in line with school’s behaviour policy.
- Parents or Carer contacted.
- Reporting of illegal activities.
Permission Form
For students at Kingsmeadow to browse on the Internet, use email, Internet Chatrooms or use the school website the student and their parent/carer needs to sign this agreement, to show that they understand the importance of our strict rules. When you have read our ICT Acceptable Use Policy please sign and return the permission form to the school. This can be found in the document below:

Parent/Carer
As the parent or carer or the above student, I have read the Acceptable Use Policy. I give permission for my child to use the Internet for educational purposes. I understand that every reasonable precaution has been taken by the school to provide for online safety. The school cannot be held responsible if students access unsuitable websites.
I agree that if my child’s schoolwork is chosen for inclusion on the website it may include their image. I understand and accept the terms of the Acceptable Use Policy about publishing student’s work on the website.
