Bee Project
The idea for the Bee Project first started in June 2010. Gateshead council had previously worked with students from Kingsmeadow with the Chelsea Flower show, and this proved to be a great success. So when the idea of keeping bees in the Dunston area was put forward, Kingsmeadow School was thought to be the ideal place to start.
We have six beehives within the school grounds (that’s 360 thousand bees!) and we use the expertise of Kyle Miller who has been a successful bee keeper for many years. There are about eight pupils involved and they meet every Tuesday after school with myself, Kyle and Carl Taylor who is a neighbourhood officer at Gateshead Council. In these sessions the pupils have learnt a great deal about bee keeping. For example they have helped assemble the hives and regularly check on the condition of the bees. Candles and hand cream have been made and the area around the hives has many new planted trees. Look out for the following pupils in their bee suits.......!
Cameron Hewitt, Rachel Robson, Kieran Watts, Amy Futers, Elliott Jerry, Glen Gent, Nathan Swan and Graham Smith
All bees are essential to the environment and this project is a great boost for the local area. We hope the bees produce a plentiful amount of honey in the coming months, most of which will go on sale at the Summer Fayre in Dunston.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Mr Farthing
