Parking Restrictions

Gateshead Council have asked us to display this notice on our website.  These are their proposals to reduce the unsafe and inconsiderate parking practices near school - July 2009

"SCHOOL KEEP CLEAR" PARKING RESTRICTIONS

For a long time, many schools have had "keep clear" markings outside their entrances.   But these restrictions have not always been compulsory.   Gateshead Council is currently working to make most of these restrictions mandatory and enforceable and the necessary physical and legal work is due to be completed during the summer holidays.

Where you see yellow zig zags on the road and the words “School Keep Clear” like this:

School Keep Clear Parking Lines

These road markings are accompanied by a sign with a yellow background like this:

No Stopping Sign

You must NOT stop on those lines at all during the times shown.   Apart from operational emergency services vehicles, there are no exceptions to this, even to drop someone off or pick them up.   Penalty Charge Notices may be issued instantly by the Council’s Civil Enforcement Officers to vehicles stopping on these zig zag lines.

Although the Council already enforces these restrictions where they exist, more of them are being brought into force over the summer and there will be greater focus on these restrictions and in surrounding streets with effect from the new school year in September 2009.   This will both improve road safety around schools and help to minimise inconvenience to local residents.

Further guidance on the road markings and signs involved can be found in the current edition of the Highway Code.   Alternatively, if you would like to discuss any specific points, please feel to contact the Parking Services team within the Gateshead Council’s Transport and Highways Service on telephone number 0191 4333155, or by email at:
