Governor Report Following a School Visit
Governor Name : Mrs L Mains
Date of Visit: 04.07.11
Subject, purpose of visit and link to school improvement plan:
English. To enable me to gain an understanding of the school’s strengths in English and how well it links the subject to the school improvement plan. The visit also gave me a greater understanding of the methods and resources of the teaching and learning within Kingsmeadow.
Details:
I visited various English sessions with Mr Gray, Department Head. I saw some very interesting work being carried out in English which included other subjects, e.g. History, one class was focussing their lesson around Pearl Harbour, another was linked to Drama, and a third made use of ICT.
One group had been involved in filming short dramas on their mobile phones and uploading onto memory sticks or disks. These dramas, were produced, directed and acted by the students, some budding directors here! I was very impressed that the lessons allowed individuals to progress at different levels, and a very good example of this was the learning being carried out in one of the ICT suites. The software being used allowed individual progress from basic foundation through to higher levels. Students are allowed access to this at home. The software programme includes assessment to enable students to assess their own progress and move up levels. There is also an excellent programme, Lexia that supports young people with Dyslexia.
As well as individual working, there were some good examples of team work.
It was good to see the students involved and expressing opinions and good to see that Mr Gray knew the individual students and was familiar with some of their work.
