Key Stage 3
Spellings
http://www.timesspellingbee.co.uk
Every week Tutor groups revise the spelling of five words. The words come from the National Literacy Strategy and it is expected that students in KS3 should try to learn these words. Tutors test the students and a trophy is rewarded to the Tutor group who have made the most progress. Prizes are also awarded at the end of each term, during the Reward Ceremony, to the Tutor group who averaged the best result throughout the term.
Spelling Challenge
Students also have the option of entering the ‘Spelling Challenge’ using the words of the week to insert into a cloze exercise. Every fortnight, one entry is drawn from each year group and the winner receives 10 stars, towards reward trips. They also have the opportunity to win Metro Centre vouchers at the Rewards Ceremony at the end of term.

Accelerated Reader
This program gives all students a book which should be right for their level of confidence with reading. It is hoped that your child read some of their book regularly and complete a quick quiz on a fortnightly basis. As a parent, you can log on to the site and chart your son or daughter’s progress. Students pick their own book (with some help) and are given time during the school week to read and change books. Prizes and trips are organised for students who put effort into their reading.
Home Connect
Home connect is a feature which students and parents can access outside of school from any computer with an internet connection.
Home Connect is fun and easy to use and allows students, parents and teachers to share information about individual student progress in Accelerated Reader
To use Home Connect, click on the link below and log-in using the personal Accelerated Reader user name and password provided to every student on the program (if you do not have these details, the school can provide them for you).

Lexia
Lexia Reading is an exciting, fun software program that provides the individualised, targeted practice students need to master a range of reading skills. Our school has successfully implemented Lexia Reading as part of our curriculum in reading.
Lexia Reading works as follows:
- students are placed into Lexia Reading based on their individual reading needs
- Lexia Reading automatically paces each student by providing reinforcement activities when they need additional time on task. Students practise, apply and then proceed with the skills they have mastered
- students systematically progress through the software and gain a sense of achievement, confidence and independence
- students can log on to Lexia at home.
