The department currently consists of 5 full and 2 part time well qualified subject specialists and is supported by the equivalent of one full time Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

The department has a suite of six classrooms which are all fitted with Interactive White boards and furnished to a high specification.  There is a departmental resource/work area.

During Key Stage 3, students’ progress is monitored using APP (Assessing Pupil Progress).  Year 7 students are taught in mixed ability groups, following the National Curriculum.  In Years 8 and 9, students are allocated a set, similarly following the National Curriculum, while also addressing Functional Skills and preparing for Key Stage 4. 

In years 10 and 11 students are taught in ability sets.  The department currently follows AQA syllabus A English and English Literature, which will be replaced by WJEC English.  Students are entered for examinations in January or during the summer session.  Some groups of students are also given the chance to follow AQA media studies or WJEC Film Studies.
